The Naked Gun creator David Zucker has no plans to watch the new reboot starring Liam Neeson, despite the critical praise and congratulating the filmmaker on the box office success of the film.
Last weekend, the highly anticipated reboot of the beloved comedy franchise was released in theaters to major success as it managed to open with almost $17 million. It was seen as a signal that the audience might be ready to watch a comedy again on the big screen. Not only that, the film has also been praised by critics and received an impressive CinemaScore of A- (on par with the original film).
What Does David Zucker Think of The Naked Gun Reboot's Box Office Success?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Zucker shared his reaction to The Naked Gun's reboot box office success on its opening weekend.
He was happy that the film managed to do well at the box office and hoped that it signaled that comedy is back in movie theaters. He also revealed that he congratulated director Akiva Schaffer on the success.
"I’m excited about it because it just shows that there’s a strong market for comedy in movie theaters, and spoof in particular," Zucker said.
"People are liking it, which is great. I really like the director, and I just couldn’t wish him more well. I texted him already, saying, ‘I hear the reviews are great, and it’s tracking well.’ He was very happy to hear from me, and we’ll probably get together later in the month when the smoke clears."
However, despite expressing his support for the film's box office success, Zucker still has no plans to watch the reboot anytime soon.
Why David Zucker Has No Plans to Watch The Naked Gun Reboot?
Zucker explained why he is not planning to watch the new film and why he declined the opportunity to watch an early cut when he was invited.
"I’m not gonna see it, but I don’t see any of the sequels that were of my material done by other people, and that’s fine. I’ve told Akiva that I have no intention to see it," he said with a laugh.
"He actually invited me to come see an early cut of it, but I told him there’s nothing I could do to help because it really isn’t what I would have done. That’s not to say that he didn’t actually end up doing a good movie. But I don’t think I could help with that."
Zucker also shared that he turned down an offer to be credited as an executive producer of the film.
"I won’t take credit on anything that I didn’t work on from the beginning. I don’t need the money. After the agents and managers, it would have paid three electric bills, probably. If it’s a big hit, Akiva should get the credit, and he deserves it," he said.
