The Winchesters Will Embody What Supernatural Did, Showrunner Says

Although the couple is similar to their future sons, Sam (Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Ackles), The Winchesters will begin with a larger gang of hunters, as John and Mary meet other hunters, Carlos (Jojo Fleites) and Latika (Nida Kurshid) during their eventful adventure.

"We are embodying a lot of what Supernatural did, at the same time, Supernatural was a two-hander," The Winchesters showrunner Robbie Thompson told Entertainment Weekly. "That family expanded as characters like Castiel (Misha Collins) and Bobby (Jim Beaver) and others came in, but we're starting with a larger family."

The first few seasons of Supernatural, where the hunters battled "monsters of the week" in addition to a "big bad" for the entire season, will also serve as inspiration for the spin-off, according to Thompson.

However, Thompson admitted that "you can't recreate Supernatural" and that The Winchesters will instead shine "a light on new corners of the Supernatural universe."

"This isn't just coming on to a new thing, this is something that has 15 years of intense storytelling and you guys are a representative of this thing that we built, of the family," Ackles said. "There's a big population of people that are very protective of the story."

There's no pressure, Ackles said in jest, adding that he "didn't work my ass off for 15 years to have you kids come in here and f—k it up."
