The Wilhelm Scream will be Retired from Future Star Wars Movies

Star Wars movies follow a tradition, and one of them is the inclusion of a long-running cinema gag called the Wilhelm Scream. The sound effect has been found in every Star Wars movie since A New Hope, but starting with Rogue One, it looks like the Star Wars films will be relying on a different sound effect.

Supervising sound editor Matthew Wood told ABC News:

"In this movie, we decided to move from the Wilhelm scream. We're letting the past die, as Kylo Ren says. "

We've started another scream that we like, it's actually been in this film and Rogue One, and some other films that are not Star Wars-related. But it's our own little calling card."

As for the scream that they have chosen as a replacement, Wood decided not to give it away as of the moment:

"It would reveal too much, but in due time it will be revealed. I'll let it gestate in a few more films before we start talking about what it is."

With the information out now, however, I'm guessing some fanboy with too much time is going to try and scour Rogue One and The Last Jedi for this new signature sound. Though the Wilhelm Scream has been a tradition with Star Wars movies, I particularly like how it finds its way into other films outside of the franchise—heck, that's where use of the sound started.

I'm guessing the sound will be found once Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits home video. Catch it on digital on March 13, and Blu-Ray on March 27.
