Illumination CEO and The Super Mario Bros. Movie producer, Chris Meledandri, spoke to Bloomberg about the possibility of a sequel happening for the film.

Meledandri said, "I’m not allowed to talk about that right now. Clearly I’ll continue to work with them on the board level and we definitely hope to do more things together."

While on the topic, Meledandri also spoke about the box office returns of the movie, "My mind is a little bit blown. They are beyond my expectations. I’m extremely conservative by nature, but they are beyond anyone’s wildest expectations."

Meledandri added, "Our focus right now is entirely on bringing the film out to the audience, and at this time, we’re not prepared to talk about what’s coming in the future."

"I definitely wouldn’t rule anything out," Meledandri concluded.

Since there is still no confirmation whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is happening, it could take years before it could come out should it be renewed for a sequel.
