The Suicide Squad Star Sylvester Stallone Was Originally Offered the Batgirl Villain Role

Yesterday, we reported that Doom Patrol star Brendan Fraser has been cast to play the villain Firefly in the Batgirl HBO Max film. But as it turns out, the role was originally offered to a veteran action star.

Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Twitter that The Suicide Squad star Sylvester Stallone was originally offered the villain role in Batgirl, but things did not work out. He also hinted that the film is casting an actor who will play "the son of the gangster/villain, who becomes romantically linked" to Batgirl.

We don't know exactly why things did not work out between Stallone and the studio. Some fans are speculating that it might be because of scheduling conflict since the actor is reportedly going to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (although that hasn't been confirmed by the studio or the filmmakers). If Stallone was cast, it would have been his second DC role as previously voiced King Shark in The Suicide Squad.

In the end, Fraser got the role of Firefly and fans couldn't be more thrilled with the casting. The response to the news has been nothing but positive and a lot of people were happy that the actor's career renaissance continues with a high-profile role in a superhero film. He is also no stranger to the DC universe as he currently plays Cliff Steele/Robotman in the TV series Doom Patrol.

As of now, the plot details for Batgirl are still under wraps. We know that In the Heights star Leslie Grace has been cast for the titular role. J.K. Simmons is also expected to reprise his role of Commissioner Gordon. The directors have also stated that Batman will be making an appearance in the film.

Batgirl is set to be released on HBO Max next year.
