Warning: if you haven't seen James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, this article contains MAJOR SPOILERS so read at your own risk!

It was quite obvious from the get-go that Warner Bros. and DC Films had huge plans for John Cena in the DC Extended universe and even The Suicide Squad director James Gunn seems like a huge fan of the wrestler-turned-actor.

In fact, after they were finished filming his debut film in the franchise, HBO Max immediately ordered a standalone Peacemaker series that will headline the streaming platform's comic book content for 2022.

The WWE superstar turned a lot of heads with his performance as Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad pretty much transformed the character from a D-list comic book villain to a ruthless mercenary and you'd be blown away at how Gunn handled the character.

However, it came as a huge shock to a lot of fans when Christopher Smith got "killed" during his intense face-off with Robert DuBois aka Bloodsport played by Idris Elba.

The jaw-dropping moment left a lot of people confused since Cena was set to headline his solo series. But during the post-credits scene of the film, it was revealed that Peacemaker was miraculously able to survive being shot in the throat by Bloodsport so we can pretty much confirm that the Peacemaker series will in fact be set following the events of the film.

What's even more shocking is the fact that Smith is being set up as Task Force X's biggest villain yet and following his gruesome fate, it wouldn't be shocking if Smith sought revenge against DuBois.

It's also safe to assume at this point that he'll be working with Amanda Waller, the mastermind behind the Corto Maltese mission. I don't know about you but James Gunn just made things a lot more interesting in the DCEU and he's definitely the breath of fresh air we were desperately in need of.

The Suicide Squad is now showing in cinemas. It's also available for streaming on HBO Max.
