The Suicide Squad Director James Gunn Shares Film's Original Dark Ending

The Suicide Squad was received well for its R-rated take on the DC characters as they push the boundaries that have never been done before in the DCEU. But despite being a gore and dark film, it still had a happy ending for most of the surviving characters. As it turns out, that wasn't the case originally.

Speaking with Cinema Blend, director James Gunn shared the original ending that he had for the film where Ratcatcher 2 was supposed to die in which would have led to an intense confrontation between Bloodsport and Amanda Waller.

He said, "At the very end of the movie, Ratcatcher 2 had taken the information about from Jotunheim. She had smuggled in and gotten away with all of that information from Jotunheim, and the rest of the group didn't know about it. And (Amanda) Waller blew up her head, after they went back to the prison! At which point, Harley tries to talk Bloodsport -- Bloodsport’s freaking out, because he's connected to this person, like a daughter. And he's freaking out, and Harley is actually being sort of kind, in a weird way, trying to talk Bloodsport into just letting it go. But Bloodsport ends up shooting Waller in the heart with a combustible bullet and threatening to blow her up. It was sort of complicated, but it was something like that. He didn't shoot her in the heart. He shot her right below the heart with one of the exploding bullets, which we see Peacemaker using earlier in the movie. And so now she has to do what he says."

When asked about why he didn't decide to go with the original ending he had in mind. He explained, "It was just too dark for me. It was really just too dark. It didn't really work for me. It didn't really tell the story that I wanted to tell, which is much more about the characters’ different journeys, emotionally. And for me, really, the ending with Bloodsport petting the rat... that, to me, was the perfect ending for the movie."

It sounds like the original ending for The Suicide Squad would be a huge contrast to the ending that we got in the version that we watched. It is understandable that Gunn didn't push the dark ending since it would have been a bummer and also taken away the joy of the film. It would have also been painful to see Ratcatcher 2 die since she was the emotional core of the film and maybe it really is the right decision to not go with a bleaker ending. You couldn't help but wonder though what the film would have looked like if they went on that route.

Even though The Suicide Squad wasn't a huge success at the box office, it was still received well by the critics and audience. It will also continue through the Peacemaker series that is set to premiere on HBO Max this coming January.
