Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil has been adapted into film on Netflix and was released on October 19, 2022. Bearing the same name as the book series, the film — almost — went cover to cover in making the piece come to life. However, the film ended on quite a cliffhanger. While best friends Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) managed to return to their village in Gavaldon, the movie ends with an arrow fired by Tedros (Jamie Flatters) which pierced through a portal from his world into the tree in Gavaldon, with a cryptic message teasing for the second movie: “I need you, Agatha.” And the Storian (voiced by Cate Blanchett) ends with: “This was only the beginning.”

Chainani’s book series consists of six books and seeing as the movie perfectly set up the beginning of the second novel, there are questions surrounding a sequel. Of course, fans are also expectant of what’s to come next for best friends Sophie and Agatha ‘Aggie.’ Check some of the fan tweets below:

Director Paul Fieg was quick to address this as he expresses his goal for The School for Good and Evil to be a franchise, which of course, promises a sequel soon, as told on Entertainment Weekly.

“The goal is definitely for this to be a franchise. That’s the plan going forward, just take all the material of these books, and hopefully make a franchise out of it. We love the characters, love the world. The books are super fun and very dense.”

Fieg also adds that he didn’t want its first adaptation of the books to be exactly what was in its pages, noting that growing up, it’s fun to watch a comic-book movie and find all the Easter eggs yourself.

“For this [film], you don’t have to know the book. Come in, enjoy this story, enjoy these characters, then if you want to go and read the books after that, that’s great. They both need to stand on their own. And hopefully we’ll continue to do that in a sequel.”

The School for Good and Evil is streaming on Netflix.
