The Russo Brothers Beg To Direct One of Marvel's Best Movies

Marvel Studios might have released hundreds of movies, but some of their offerings are just obviously better than others. May it be because of the massive viewership it was able to gather at its box office or its solid storytelling and CGI that wow the viewers. Anthony Russo and Joseph Russo, popularly known as the Russo brothers, have directed four MCU movies. Despite their impressive input on their projects, the duo revealed that they have to beg to be able to direct one of the said Marvel offerings that started everything in their career.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) is considered one of the best Marvel movies, and it is the first movie that the Russo brothers directed for the MCU. Given the impressive result of this film, the siblings' filmmakers were able to direct more projects for Marvel, and all of them were widely celebrated, namely Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Oscar-winning director Steven Soderberg revealed in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that the duo came to him for help landing their first MCU offering.

“We're up for this Captain America movie,” Soderbergh recalled in a 2012 conversation with the Russos. "Will you call Kevin Feige and say nice things about us?" Soderbergh agreed, under the condition that they confirm that this is what they want, not just something they think they should want. “Oh no, we have this massive comic book collection. This is our dream job,” the Russo brothers reasoned. After their success with four major Marvel blockbusters, it seems clear they were telling the truth. “It turns out they weren't kidding,” the Traffic (2000) director remarked.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an action-spy thriller following Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) at his most compelling. The film continues to be the best of its kind as it successfully offers a full-packed action sequence, like the fight scene in the elevator, which lands in line as one of the best MCU action scenes ever. The scene alone was choreographed, well shot, and full of tension that fans can get over, which Marvel’s current directors are trying to replicate in their future offerings.

Before the success of their Marvel career, the Russo brothers were best known for films such as You, Me, and Dupree, as well as their work on sitcoms such as Happy Endings and the early seasons of Community. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, they were not the obvious choice to continue Captain America's story at all. That's why the Russo brothers enlisted the assistance of their friend Soderbergh, who proved the best of his own.
