The Roundup became the center of attention again due to the wrong reason.

Since The Outlaws released its second part, The Roundup, the Ma Dong Seok-led film has been garnering different recognitions and breaking new records.

The 2022 crime action film follows the lives of detective Ma Seok Do and his police station’s violent crimes squad as they try to beat Kang Hae Sang, a supervillain who has been doing crimes in Vietnam.

But the success seemingly became a short-lived moment due to the recent issue that arose.

The Roundup in Hot Water Due to One of Its Scenes

Korea JoongAng Daily reported that several associations of people with disabilities filed a petition to the National Human Rights Commission of Korea on Thursday to take action against The Roundup. They highlighted that a scene erroneously portrayed people with mental disabilities.

The groups, including The Research Institute of the Differently Abled Person’s Right in Korea, had a press event in front of the NHRCK’s building. They demanded the industry stop screening the movie because of its one scene that portrayed patients with mental health issues as criminals.

They are referring to the scene that is shown at the beginning of the film.

A man, who is a patient, threatens police with a knife while taking two women as his hostages at a local supermarket.

The characters of the movie then call the man as a “wacko” who made his way out of the mental hospital.

Film’s Scene Affects People With Mental Health Issues

As the associations tackled the issue outside the NHRCK, they also took their time to criticize the scene and explained why it affected the whole movie.

“[It is] describing people with mental disabilities as violent and dangerous criminals, and making [the public] perceive them as unpredictable and aggressive beings,” they said. “We regret that a popular film which surpassed 10 million in ticket sales is proliferating a negative image about people with mental disabilities.”

The mental health groups revealed that they had already sent a statement to the production team on June 14. However, the crews have not responded to it or sent a message of apology.

The Roundup is yet to address the allegation. But the protesters urged them to release a public apology and sit for a meeting with them.
