Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) is no longer a rookie in his unit. But he's constantly thrust into unexpected situations, most recently surviving a trip in the middle of nowhere with a new patrol officer. The Rookie Season 5 is set to be just as exciting as the previous seasons. And, before we know it, the premiere will be here.

The Rookie Season 5 Release Date

If The Rookie Season 5 follows in the footsteps of past seasons, it will begin where Season 4 left off. Nolan will presumably return from purgatory, most likely continuing his ambition of becoming a training officer while dating Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan).

Officer Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) and Sergeant Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) are expected to go undercover as a couple, which could give them the chance to practice more of the PDA that #Chenford supporters have been demanding.

Additionally, Detective Officer Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) wishes to return to work after her maternity leave, opening up opportunities for additional pairings with Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz).

Over the past few seasons, The Rookie has grown in popularity at 10 p.m. on Sundays. It follows that ABC network management decided to keep the program at that position for the future season as well. On Sept. 25, The Rookie Season 5 will debut, according to the show's Twitter account.

“One of our strategies and themes for the fall was stability, which allows us to focus on a few key priorities, so keeping The Rookie in its Sunday time slot where it has been performing extremely well…it felt like the right thing to do,” Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, told Deadline.

The Rookie Season 5 Cast

The cast of The Rookie Season 5 is already back on set and ready for more action from the Mid-Wilshire station. On June 22, O'Neil and Fillion posted that it was Day 2 of filming for the forthcoming season. Winter revealed on Instagram the day before that he will be reprising his part as "Dim," the not-so-bright drug mule he will go undercover as in a drug trafficking raid.

Will Dim and Juicy (Chen's alias) push Tim and Lucy into a real relationship? How much crossover stuff will the feds provide this season? Will Nolan finally be trusted to train young rookies? To find out, we'll have to wait until September.

The Rookie: Feds Spinoff

This fall also marked the series' first effort at a spinoff, with The Rookie: Feds, which was presented as a backdoor pilot at the end of Season 4. Niecy Nash-Betts plays Simone Clark, the FBI academy's oldest rookie.

The Rookie: Feds will air Tuesday nights at 10 p.m., after Bachelor in Paradise. It will premiere on Sept. 27.

The Rookie Season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. at 10 p.m. EST.
