Fans might be worried about the future of The Punisher, but with so many positive fan reviews for the series' second season, showrunner Steve Lightfoot already has plans for a third batch of episodes.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lightfoot together with Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb explained that while a season 3 renewal doesn't lie in their hands, another season of The Punisher would make the studio happy.
"We would love that, and nothing would make us happier than to work with those talented writers and crew," Loeb told the entertainment news outlet, "As I have repeatedly said, it is not our decision. We are ready to go and would love to do so. It is Netflix's call to make."
"We were finished before any of this started happening," Lightfoot added. "I left [season 2] on that final shot that was just meant to [make people go], "Wow, I can't wait to see season 3." That was it. That was what I want them to take away, and it's like any show — if you've been in this business long enough, we've all worked on shows that got canceled that you wish hadn't. I just hope we made a great show.… My philosophy is to always make every season like it could be your last. Don't save anything for next season, even if that means you've painted yourself into a corner. But make every season the best it can be, and hopefully, it speaks for itself."
There's been a lot of concern over the fate of The Punisher and Jessica Jones the past few months. Netflix has been canceling Marvel TV's series left and right. The streaming giant first axed Iron Fist back in October last year despite the improvement in its second season. A week after that, Netflix went after Luke Cage, a fan-favorite Marvel TV series. Then, right after its season 2 premiere, Netflix decided to put critically-acclaimed Daredevil on the chopping block, sparking outrage among Marvel fans.
Even until now, fans continue to rally together and collect signatures for petitions to bring back Daredevil to the series.
With so many cancellations going around, it wouldn't come as a surprise seeing The Punisher find its way on the chopping block too. Let's just wait and see what happens.
The Punisher season 2 is currently available on Netflix.
