The New Mutants Director Explains His Plans for a Trilogy Including X-Men Inferno Adaptation

There may still be some sort of uncertainty behind the release of The New Mutants with the COVID-19 pandemic still rampaging around the globe, however, that hasn't dampened fans excitement over the movie.

Not only is The New Mutants a unique blend of horror and comic book movie, the film offers a tone so different from what the recent comic book movie market has been producing.

Speaking in an interview with Slash Film,The New Mutant director Josh Boone discusses his original plans for the movie, saying that he had hoped that the project would kick off a trilogy of unique X-Men films. While the debut film would explore the "rubber reality," its follow-up would showcase an alien invasion while the third would come out as an adaptation of X-Men comics' "Inferno" storyline, serving as another supernatural horror movie.

"They were all supposed to be kind of separate horror genre films: the first one's like a rubber reality horror movie, the second one was supposed to be an alien invasion movie with Warlock, and then the third one was going to take all these elements from the X-Men crossover from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s called 'Inferno' to be a kind of supernatural, apocalyptic horror movie. That was the plan," he told the entertainment news outlet.

Boone's ideas all sound terribly exciting, and we're sure that fans would love to see the director explore all of these ideas. The only question is whether Marvel is going to allow a sequel to The New Mutants when it's so preoccupied with Phase 4 of the MCU.

The New Mutants is set to premiere on August 28, 2020.
