It's been a long time coming but Keanu Reeves is officially making his triumphant return to The Matrix franchise in The Matrix Resurrections. The highly anticipated science-fiction flick picks up where 2003's The Matrix Revolutions left off but in an intriguing turn of events, the film's main characters Neo and Trinity seem to have forgotten the epic events that transpired over the course of the original Matrix trilogy.

The trailer opens with Neo going by his original name of Thomas Anderson as he speaks with his therapist (Neil Patrick-Harris) about having "dreams that weren't just dreams". Anderson is seen taking prescription blue pills (only true blue Matrix fans would understand) and later on, he runs into Trinity at a coffee shop. Shockingly enough, the two former allies don't seem to remember each other.

The near 3-minute teaser is something you would expect from a Matrix project — stunning visuals, breathtaking scenes, and actual references to the original films but the most intriguing aspect of the trailer aside from the entire Neo and Trinity situation is the appearance of what looks to be a younger version of Morpheus played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who offers Neo the red pill. What's going on? There's surely a lot to unpack here! Check out the trailer above!

For a project fans have been waiting to see for close to 20 years, I gotta say, the official trailer for The Matrix Resurrections isn't the strongest. In fact, I found it a little bland and underwhelming compared to its predecessor's trailers but I guess it's a little too early to tell judging by the teaser alone. I'm pretty sure WB has crafted another sci-fi masterpiece that will serve as a huge love letter to fans of the franchise and we'll just have to see it for ourselves.

The Matrix Resurrections hits cinemas and HBO Max this December.
