The upcoming film The Marvels is set to arrive in theaters later this year and it will be one of the few remaining superhero features that will be released for the remainder of 2023 as well as the third entry from the MCU.

For the past several months, there have been some concerns about the issue of superhero fatigue since a couple of films in the genre that were released recently underperformed at the box office and none of them have crossed the billion-dollar mark.

So far, based on the trailers that they released, The Marvels looks like another typical superhero fare with action-packed sequences and otherwordly beings. However, it does feature beloved characters that we are already familiar with which could help its appeal to the general audience.

It remains to be seen whether the so-called superhero fatigue will end up affecting the box-office performance of The Marvels later this year. All we know is that Marvel Studios has high hopes that it won't be a disappointment at the very least.

In an interview with Total Film magazine (via Games Radar), The Marvels director Nia DaCosta opened up about the issue of superhero fatigue which she acknowledges that it is an issue that exists right now in the genre.

She promised that her upcoming film will be able to stand out from the other entries in the genre due to its "wacky" and "silly" tone and the "bright worlds" that we haven't seen before.

"I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists. The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky, and silly," DaCosta said.

"The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds, unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before."

The words that we're hearing from the director sound very promising and we can appreciate the fact that DaCosta is making an effort to make her film different and stand out from the other entries that we've seen in the superhero movie genre.

However, it is also a questionable description since you can argue that a couple of MCU films in the past have gone into the "wacky" and "silly" territory whether it's the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Taika Waititi's Thor films.

We've also seen a lot of "bright worlds" that were explored in many MCU movies in the past and, based on the trailers, it looks like the film doesn't offer anything new in terms of the visuals.

Perhaps what DaCosta might have been describing is that the film will visit planets that were never explored before in the MCU and the "wacky" and "silly" tone might be about how they are doubling down on that which is a risky territory since past MCU films have been criticized for that.

Nevertheless, we should still give the director the benefit of the doubt and all the previews that they showed so far are promising that the film will deliver the spectacle that the audience will be looking for and it could be an interesting entry in the MCU.

The Marvels is set to release in theaters this November 10.
