Comic book fans have been campaigning for Giancarlo Esposito to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a lot of the convinced that The Mandalorian star would be a great fit for the billion-dollar franchise. However, the MCU fandom is quite torn on which character the 64-year-old actor should end up playing, with names like Professor X, Doctor Doom, and even Magneto all part of the dream casting list.

Just recently, Esposito reignited speculation surrounding his involvement in the MCU after confirming that he's been in talks with Marvel Studios. Well, it looks like the Moff Gideon came really close to playing an iconic baddie who has become the subject of several fan theories.

According to Twitter tipster MyTimeToShineHello, Esposito was actually offered the Mephisto role but might have turned it down. The iconic Marvel villain has been rumored to be making his live-action debut since the start of Phase Four, with many speculating that he was going to be the main villain of WandaVision.

However, a few months away before Phase Five kickstarts, there's still no sign of Marvel's version of the devil. Now, rumors are swirling all over social media that Sacha Baron Cohen could be playing Mephisto in the upcoming Ironheart show.

It's worth mentioning that Esposito has made it clear in numerous interviews that he isn't that keen on playing a villain role in the MCU. In fact, he confirmed last August that he's been offered several high-profile roles but insisted that he wants to take on the Charles Xavier character in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito is expected to return as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian Season 3.
