The Mandalorian Almost Replaced Baby Yoda Puppet With CGI

The Mandalorian is amazing for a number of reasons, whether it's the tone that manages to be gritty while keeping that Star Wars charm, or some of the cool action sequences. However, the one talking point that fans won't shut up about is Baby Yoda, who is so cute that fans are debating if he should take Detective Pikachu's crown. Unlike Detective Pikachu, Baby Yoda is a puppet with some CGU but there was a point when it was going to be completely digital.

Enter puppeteer extraordinaire Werner Herzog, who set things right and made sure the puppet stayed on set.

According to Vanity Fair, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were about to have a reshoot that would have been completely CGI in case the puppet wasn't convincing enough. Herzog, who found out about this, called the two "cowards" and demanded that they leave the puppet, showing that he's willing to do reshoots as well. Awesome.

Obviously, this has been to everyone's benefit since the Baby Yoda puppet has proven to be an endearing part of the show, with many "d'aaawww, so cute" moments throughout. Sure, some CGI is sprinkled in to make its face or eyes look more realistic, for the most part, but most of the movement is still puppetry.

Just to be clear, we're not against CGI, look at Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, he looks great. But recent Star Wars films have proven that puppetry can be done well and there's no reason to throw that away when it is right there.

The Mandalorian is now showing in Disney+.
