The Little Mermaid Remake Stars Tease Reprising Their Roles in Potential Sequel

The Little Mermaid is no doubt a franchise. The original 1989 animated film not only rendered a sequel titled The Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea, but even a prequel, The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning.

But will the live-action remake mirror the same?

When asked whether it is possible for the live remake to create a sequel, just like its animated counterpart, the stars spoke their mind and are no doubt down to return and reprise their roles.

“I love that movie.” Halle Bailey said while explaining what occurs in The Little Mermaid 2 in a recent interview with Narcity.

Meanwhile, Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric in the remake, chimed in, “Yeah, I would be up for doing it. I kind of would like to also be a merman.”

Even though that doesn’t exactly happen in the sequel, the actor wishes the remake could do that, “So if we can also somehow involve that storyline to go with [Melody, their daughter].”

Bailey added, “See her swim in the water.”

In case you didn’t know, The Little Mermaid II features the life of Ariel and Eric living on the shore, near the sea, with their only daughter, Melody.

On the day of Melody’s birth, Morgana, the sister of Ursula the Sea Witch, tried to take Ariel’s baby in yet another attempt to steal the trident from the Sea King, leading Ariel to forbid Melody from ever coming to the ocean.

However, little did Ariel know, this only led Melody to be even more curious about the sea, which eventually led to her daughter exploring the body of water on her own, a reverse tale on what Ariel pursued in the first film.

It is worth noting that even director Rob Marshall has also considered a sequel ahead of the remake’s release, in a previous interview with Total Film magazine:

“I do think it’s right for certain things. But you have to see how a movie plays and how it does…”

In the meantime, Disney’s The Little Mermaid live remake premieres on May 26!
