The Lion King Remake Now Has The Highest July Opening Of All Time

The Lion King remake did very poorly in terms of reviews with critics and fans agreeing that the visual achievements don't necessarily make up for the film's lack of heart and energy. However, it seems like Disney's CGI remake of the animated classic is winning at the box office, shattering the record for biggest opening weekend in July.

Cinema Blend just recently listed ranked July's different releases according to their domestic box office earnings, and it looks like The Lion King just won the top spot. Raking in $185 million in the North American box office in just three days, the film did much better than Spider-Man: Far From Home and Toy Story 4.

In fact, the film did so well that it outperformed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the film with the biggest opening weekend on a July.

That's not the only win. The film is also doing exceptionally well at the overall box office. In just three days, The Lion King has already earned $543 million, making it a more or less commercial success.

This shouldn't really come as a surprise. Nostalgia can be pretty powerful – so far Disney's been relying on the power of nostalgia for many of its remakes. The only question now is whether nostalgia can take The Lion King even further as it continues its theatrical release. Will the film be able to reach $1 billion despite its scathing reviews?

The Lion King is currently screening in cinemas.
