Naughty Dog’s 2013 video game, The Last of Us, may have been adapted into an HBO TV show, but that doesn’t get rid of the fact that Joel Miller remains to be one of the scariest main characters you’ll ever know. Aside from Joel’s physical flexibility and incredible stealth in the game, Pedro Pascal reveals what exactly makes the character scarier beyond that.

In a recent interview with Wired, Pascal, who portrays Joel Miller in The Last of Us on HBO, shares details of what scared him of playing the titular role in the first place. While the actor is no stranger to his career, one major characteristic of Joel frightened him, check out his full comment below:

“I think what’s scary about Joel is that none of us really know what we’d be capable of if faced with the idea of losing love,” Pascal said, “Whether it’s conscious or unconscious, being alive or even being a human being is directly connected to the love you feel. Existing is connected to the love you feel toward a particular relationship — your child, your partner — and to lose that?”

Pedro continued on to say how a person dealing with grief could be more difficult to deal with, especially seeing how it is possible to lose your loved one again, “Some people are not capable of applying rational thought to that kind of loss, or the threat of that loss, or the threat of that loss again, right?”

Seeing as Joel lost his daughter Sarah in the first episode, right at the beginning of the spread of the virus, this would easily lead the viewers into Joel’s point of view at the thought of having to look after Ellie, a kid around the same age as the daughter he lost. Let’s just say Pedro isn’t far-fetched on his take on Joel Miller when it comes to love.

The Last of Us Episode 1 is available to stream on HBO Max. Meanwhile, The Last of Us Episode 2 comes on January 22, 2023 at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PT.
