The Last of Us Scores Its Own Game of Thrones Opening on HBO

Apart from hiring the most iconic cast, what makes a particular TV show memorable is having its own theme song, and HBO’s The Last of Us doesn’t stray from that!

Game of Thrones, which is also a show under HBO, remains to be one of the most iconic adapted TV series, because of its orchestral arrangement in the opening. Its grand gesture, the 3D animation of the entire map of Westeros, which highlights the overall theme and message the series wants to execute to viewers — everything fit as the beginning of every episode. HBO made sure The Last of Us had its own opening sequence, too, which you can check out below:

As you might have seen in the opening credits, the “veins” represent that of the virus spreading throughout your system, but in a sense, it also indicates how the virus is spreading across the globe in The Last of Us. There was even one still that had the shape of an Infected being devoured by the virus, implying one of the many obstacles they have to go through — accepting the fact that the Infected are no longer people.

The “spread” showed the beginning, however, has yet to find its end, as we see two human figures by the end of the animation, who are none other than Joel and Ellie symbolizing humanity’s last hope of delivering the “cure” for the people. In contrast with Game of Thrones’ grand orchestral opening theme, The Last of Us features a simple guitar strumming upon the terrible circumstance Joel and Ellie would have to struggle surviving in.

The opening, similar to the Game of Thrones effect, perfectly summarizes what The Last of Us is all about: the attempt of surviving in a post-apocalyptic world in spite of nearly losing your sanity and humanity on the journey. There is no doubt that Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin finding each other to run the episodic show is a miracle for the Naughty Dog video game. I can’t imagine The Last of Us running as a mere 2-hour film at all.

The Last of Us Episode 1 is available to stream on HBO Max. Meanwhile, The Last of Us Episode 2 comes on January 22, 2023 at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PT.
