The Last of Us: Bella Ramsey on How She Perfected Ellie's Switchblade Technique

It's almost time for the premiere of The Last of Us on HBO and there is little doubt that people have high expectations of the upcoming TV series. Not surprisingly, Bella Ramsey went through many pains while preparing to play Ellie in the adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game. The former Game of Thrones actor admitted that she went through a lot just to perfect her character's switchblade technique in the show.

In the games, Ellie is given a switchblade which eventually becomes her weapon of choice. Interestingly, the same thing happens in the HBO series and Bella Ramsey had to learn how to handle a switchblade properly. She told Collider that she ended up stabbing herself "a couple of times" but assures that she wasn't hurt badly.

"Thankfully, we had a dummy knife, so it wasn’t actually sharp. It was rubber. But I didn’t start training for that as soon as I should have done," Ramsey said.

She then pointed out that she had a lot of help from the special effects team for her switchblade scenes.

"I did it on the day I was aware that I had to do this thing. I was like, 'Oh, I should have practiced this.' But it was fine. That’s where editing comes in handy," Ramsey said. "I didn’t have to be very good at it. I just had to do it a couple of times, and they could loop it, or something."

She added, "It was pretty fun. I quite enjoyed that. But I don’t think it’s a skill that I’ve continued to possess. It came for the day, and then it ran away again pretty quickly."

We're glad that Bella Ramsey was unharmed while handling the switchblade in The Last of Us. Still, we're looking forward to seeing Ellie in action when the series finally premieres next week.

The Last of Us also stars Pedro Pascal as Joel. The first episode premieres on HBO on January 15, 2023.
