Pedro Pascal Shares How The Mandalorian Is Similar To The Last of Us Joel

Pedro Pascal is popularly known for playing the stoic Mandalorian Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, but now he is taking on a similar role, which is Joel Miller from The Last of Us. Both characters are similar in terms of having been tasked to take care of a young child, and eventually, they unexpectedly end up bonding with each other. The actor touches upon how the roles helped him as an actor, and how The Mandalorian role helped him in portraying Joel.

Recently speaking with Screen Rant during a press event, Pedro Pascal opens up on the similarities and differences between playing the role of Din Djarin from The Mandalorian and Joel Miller from The Last of Us. Check out his full comments below:

“Not only that,” Pascal says when asked if he ever applied what he learned as an actor from The Mandalorian to portraying Joel Miller, “But they were happening simultaneously, as well. It’s an amazing double dip for me. And I think that there are really, really strong comparisons in terms of their journeys and their relationships.”

Pascal continues on to compare how different of an experience it was for him to play Joel while working with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and The Last of Us video game co-creator Neil Druckmann.

“With Joel, I think it was a really fascinating opportunity to discover elements from the source material,” the actor admits, “From Craig’s and Neil’s pages, from our locations, our sets and our effects; being with Bella all the time. That really kind of put all of the pieces together for me and I continued to discover them. And only in retrospect when you’re asking this question do I realize that…maybe as far as Mando and Joel are concerned, one was that they were in relationship and informing one another.”

One of the best tropes out there is probably the parental figure seemingly reluctant to look after kids, but eventually end up growing fond of them trope. In this case, The Mandalorian with Grogu, and Joel with Ellie, both of which we will be seeing soon.

While The Last of Us is set to premiere on HBO on January 15, 2023, The Mandalorian Season 3 hits Disney+ on March 1, 2023.
