The Last Jedi: Rian Johnson Hopes Snoke's Backstory Gets Explained in The Future

One of the more controversial aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the death of Snoke. The Supreme Leader of the First Order was built up heavily, with many fans curious about how he managed to get so much power after the events of the original trilogy. When his death came, it received a mixed reaction, with some fans applauding the move while others hated it and felt betrayed.

During the BAFTA Q&A, Rian Johnson explained why he killed the character off in that fashion and actually hoped that the villain's backstory will eventually be detailed. He was even open to J.J. Abrams elaborating on the character's origin in Episode IX, though one has to wonder how that will factor into the plot.

Here is Johnson's full statement:

In this particular story, it's much more like the original trilogy, where with Snoke if you think about the actual scenes, if suddenly I had paused one of the scenes to give a 30 second monologue about who he was, it would have kind of stopped the scene in its tracks, I realized. Even though it could have been interesting, something that fans were interested in, as storytellers, we have to kind of serve what the scenes need to be. It was a tough thing, even though I knew some fans were interested in it I also knew it wasn't something that dramatically had a place in this movie. Hopefully it can be addressed elsewhere or even J.J. may address it in the next movie. But it's not something that's particularly interesting to Rey, so we kind of had to follow through.

Johnson's statement makes plenty of sense since he was clearly going for a more character driven film, focusing on Rey and Kylo-Ren. Snoke suddenly explaining his backstory would have felt out of place in this film, especially with how long it is. There are those that would argue that the casino scenes could have been edited out but it did add a lot of Finn and Rose's character.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might still be showing in theaters. Expect a home release date for the film soon.
