Awkwafina is by no means a newbie in the entertainment industry. In fact, she's been a staple in Hollywood for quite some time now, having starred in various shows and movies but there's no denying that her name is about to get bigger thanks to her involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The multimedia star is part of the upcoming Marvel Studios offering Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but just as the film is about to hit cinemas, Awkwafina is dragged onto controversy by fans on social media and the amount of backlash she's been receiving is pretty intense.

The newest Marvel cast member is the latest target of cancel culture after allegations of cultural appropriation surfaced online. On Twitter, many fans pointed out that the Awkwafina has been mocking black people and black culture in general for years through her comedic skits and has gotten away with it on multiple occasions. In particular, the actress' use of "blaccent" in her skits and various movie roles is cited by fans as one of the many reasons why Awkwafina deserves to receive all the hate she could get. To those unaware, Awkwafina has been tagged for years as a cultural appropriator but the Crazy Rich Asians star has previously claimed in an interview with VICE that she "refuses" to do accents and doesn't make "a minstrel out of [Asian] people" despite her history of imitating black accents. As it stands, she has yet to address the renewed backlash she's been getting online but I gotta say, now is not the perfect timing for her to get involved in any controversy. Hopefully, she addresses the matter real soon before it affects her blossoming career.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on September 3, 2021.
