The Hollywood Remake of Anime Classic 'Your Name' Will Be 'Americanized'

Your Name, an Academy Award-nominated anime film, was an instant classic to some, using some out there concepts like time travel to make for an emotionally resonating film that touched on romance, gender dynamics, and so much more. It's considered by many to be a modern anime hit and fans started getting worried when they found out that a Hollywood remake is coming. Sure, it has J.J. Abrams producing the film but fans are worried about it being Americanized like Death Note was.

Unfortunately, an interview with Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer confirmed that the movie would indeed be Americanized or Westernized. However, this wasn't just a choice made by Hollywood elitists who think audiences "won't get it," but by those that hold the rights to the film.

According to Heisserer, Toho Animation stated that if they wanted to see a live-action remake of Your Name (or Kimi no Nawa if you're a weeb) they would do it themselves. This is interesting to hear and could even lead to an interesting interpretation of the concept.

"They stated if they wanted a Japanese live-action version, they would just do it themselves. But they want to see it through the lens of a Western viewpoint. You have to find the best iteration of that story based on the fact that they want an American live-action version of the film."

While Your Name did deal with a lot of Japanese cultures, it wasn't why the movie was a hit. The culture clashes of a city boy and small-town girl is why this movie ended up resonating with so many and this could easily be done well in an American setting. They just need good writers to work on it.

Heisserer is a good screenwriter since Arrival was amazing but we've seen good talent in bad movies before. Scarlett Johansson was in Ghost in the Shell guys.

No release date for the Your Name remake has been announced.
