There's a lot going on in the world of Ghostbusters this year. While the sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) is still the best part of a year away, there are a number of other projects on the horizon, including a Ghostbusters animated series and a Ghostbusters animated film, both of which are headed to Netflix. But it looks like Ghostbusters has already made an early return to animation.

Ghostbusters is no stranger to the world of animation. Though the franchise started life as the live-action 1984 film of the same name directed by the late Ivan Reitman, the animated show The Real Ghostbusters (1984) helped to push the IP into the mainstream, before Ghostbusters II (1989) even hit theaters. So it's really no surprise that the franchise is now returning to animation.

Now, artist Sean Galloway, who's best known for his work on The Spectacular Spider-Man, has shared his own interpretation of the "Real Ghostbusters", giving them a modern makeover. While this is in no way an official update, it does give us an idea as to what we might expect from the upcoming Ghostbusters animated projects, whether it's the film or the series.

The talented artist recently tweeted his very own concept art heavily inspired by The Real Ghostbusters, but with his own style. You can check out the images right here.

It remains to be seen what sort of animation will be applied to the upcoming projects - will they be cartoon-style or 3D-animated? - it's always fascinating to see how the animated Ghostbusters would look if they got the modern makeover. This isn't the first time the Ghostbusters have been given such a treatment, though, as there's some great 3D concept art from many years back.

In 2011, artist Fabrizio Fioretti gave them a Pixar-style makeover, creating the possibility that Ghostbusters could be interpreted by Disney (although the truth is no one really wants that, as the franchise would descend into totally family-friendly territory, thereby removing the edge that has helped to make it so popular with audiences over the decades).

Nevertheless, you can check out these incredible designs right here.
