The Falcon and the Winter Soldier fans were hoping to see Chris Evans make a surprise cameo in the grand finale but his Marvel Cinematic Universe character Steve Rogers was nowhere to be found. If you've been following the hit Disney+ series, it kept mentioning that the former Captain America is "gone" but it never really addressed his true status which is why a lot of fans were expecting to see the star-spangled man make his comeback.
It still remains a mystery why the show chose to leave Rogers out of the series apart from the occasional name drops made by Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes but considering the show revolves around the dynamic duo of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it made absolute sense.
Now, the question is, was Evans actually considered for a role in the series? Showrunner Malcolm Spellman opened up about plans for a Steve Rogers cameo in the series and while he didn't exactly go into detail, his statement pretty much suggests that they toyed with the idea of bringing him back.
In a new interview with Amon Warmann on the Fade To Black podcast (via ComicBookMovie), Spellman almost spilled the beans about Evans' involvement in the show before backpedaling. He shared: "I will say this. I'm not gonna answer that question, but I will say that a lot of people were begging for... I gotta be careful. Yeah, I can't answer that!"
Personally, I'm glad that we didn't get to see any traces of Steve in the series because an appearance from him would've potentially overshadowed the ascension of Sam Wilson as the next Captain America which was basically where the entire story revolves. Now, that's not to say that I wouldn't be interested in seeing him return to the MCU but I'm happy the spotlight was pointed directly at Sam.
