The Ending of The Last of Us Episode 5 Explained

The Last of Us always has a way of hurting people, you know? Most of the episodes of the series have deaths in it, and while Episode 4 didn't have one, Episode 5 took more than just one which levels off the field. All the time, it leads everyone to tears.

The Last of Us Episode 5 shows Henry and Sam, and the reason why Kathleen is so mad at Henry that she would put killing Henry first before dealing with the infected. She would really go through great lengths to do so but this decision bit her back in the end, too.

Since Kathleen has been so fixated on her vengeance on Henry, even when her right hand man, Perry, warned her that the clickers are underground, she went after Henry and Sam instead, after Joel and Ellie, too.

However, when things are just about to go Kathleen's way, the infected rose from the ground, with hundreds or even thousands of them; one of which is even a bloater, a harder form to kill and is more vicious than the others.

When everyone thought it would end well for Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam, it turns out Sam is infected and while Ellie tried to save him by applying her blood to his wound, things are not as simple as Ellie thought it would be.

Ellie really wanted to save him, though, but that's just not how things work. It just shows how Ellie actually cares about people and that she believes she would be humanity's last hope.

The episode is so packed that it also shows what happens to people in such a government, what people could give up and what people could become. Henry gave up Kathleen's brother for the life of his own brother and while Kathleen believes otherwise, she's not as different as Henry.

Joel showed quite a soft spot, too, because the moment he realized that what Henry is doing is trying to keep Sam safe and alive, he knows well that Henry stands on both platforms for Sam -- as a brother and as a father, too.

The Last of Us Episode 5 is now streaming on HBO Max.
