Episode 3 of Marvel's What If..? is one of the most heartbreaking alternate realities that has ever been revealed and it is nothing anything anyone ever expected at all, even for a different version of the story that from the start, death loomed all around. Up until the ending of the run, it has been surprising all throughout.

The Ending of Marvel's What If..? Episode 3 Explained
Marvel's What If..? Episode 3 has been a devastating episode ever since the moment it opened. Titled be "What If… the World Lost its Mightiest Heroes?," from the very beginning of the initiative, they were all taken down before they even started at all, before they even got the chance to be the group of heroes that they were supposed to be.
First, it was Stark who was killed in what seems to be like an accident when Black Widow administered him a drug to help him be calm, second, it was Thor when his hammer was found in Mexico, and Hawkeye seemed to have dislodged his arrow straight to the heart of the Asgardian prince, then the third was Clint Barton himself who died under mysterious circumstances in a room locked and sealed.
Following them was Bruce Banner who was with Betty Ross going into hiding. When General Ross approached the location, they were surprised when an unprecedented and uncalled-for attack was taken directly by Banner and in a few minutes, the big green guy exploded. Lastly, it was Natasha Romanoff who had to find out the root of whoever is targeting the Avengers Initiative.

It was Hank Pym all along, in pursuit of vengeance for the death of his daughter, Hope Van Dyne, a former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Still, Nick Fury still has a few tricks left. With the arrival of Loki seeking vengeance for the killer of his brother, they were able to trick Pym and apprehended him in time before the last straw of Fury was drawn.
By the end of the episode, we see two of Fury's big guns, two of the OG Avengers, the first-ever hero, Captain America, and this alternate reality seems to be different than that of Peggy's, and the woman who inspired the name of the initiative in the first place, Carol Danvers. These two captains are expected to build a new team, a different set of the Avengers.
