The DCEU Shake-Up Didn't Affect Shazam!

The DCEU had a huge plan for the franchise when Batman v Superman came out, but after divisive reactions from the audience, things have been thrown out the window one by one. Now there's an entirely new slate for the DCEU, but as it turns out, Shazam! wasn't really affected by all the shake-up.

Talking to SYFY Wire, director David F. Sanberg and producer Peter Safran revealed that Shazam! mostly stayed the same because the movie was self-contained from the get-go. When asked if the movie had any changes, the answer was:

"No, because we always wanted to just focus on telling [Shazam's] story. There was never any mandate to set things up for the future or incorporate certain things, it was just [to] make the best Shazam! movie. And then, since it's set in the world of DC, we could peek out and put in all these references and easter eggs and make it feel that it really is in that universe while still being its own story."

Based on the trailers, it looks like Shazam! will still have references to the main DCEU in general, seeing that we have a scene with Shazam fighting Sivana in a toy store filled with Justice League merch. We don't really know what's in store for the future, but hopefully Shazam! will manage to stand on its own even without all the references to the bigger universe. WB is said to be focusing on solo films for now, after all.

April is already here, and our first big blockbuster movie of the month will be Shazam! which comes out April 5.
