The critically acclaimed fantasy manga The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store is getting an anime film later this year from Production I.G.

This announcement comes as a bit of a surprise given that this two-volume manga ended back in 2018.

After all, most manga works that get anime adaptations are still ongoing or at least have only finished recently.

What’s interesting about this announcement is that it seems to signal that Production I.G is making a comeback with its new anime lineup.

While Production I.G has never really left, things have been quiet for some time.

From the 2000s to the early 2010s, the studio has been known for varied projects, including Eden of the East, Psycho-Pass, and Guilty Crown.

Soon after though, the studio focused more on its big sports anime projects such as Kuroko’s Basketball and Haikyuu!! which, while good, are on the rather safe side.

Now, it seems that the studio is once again branching out based on its latest projects.

Currently, Production I.G is working on Heavenly Delusion (or Tengoku Daimakyou), an anime adaptation of the Monthly Afternoon manga of the same name.

While the series isn’t as hyped as the likes of Demon Slayer, it has quickly gained an audience thanks to its interesting premise and mysterious post-apocalyptic setting.

In 2023, the studio will also release Kaiju No.8, its first shounen action anime in a while.

There’s a chance that this can become the studio’s next big hit given that the manga that it’s based on is one of the most popular on Jump+.

Later this year though, Production I.G will release one of its most unique anime projects in years.

The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store is a short manga series that follows a new concierge at a department store where all the customers are animals.

There, the concierge does her best to accommodate all the unusual requests and needs of her animal customers.

Despite its short length, the manga has received glowing reviews. It also won the Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival last year.

Given the unique premise of the manga, Production I.G’s upcoming film is going to be quite interesting to see when it releases in late 2023.

Though for now, there’s no word yet on a specific release date for it.
