While many of us probably expected Episode 5 of The Case Study of Vanitas to be a huge, action-packed battle against the charlatan, but it turned out to be a flashback, shedding some light on the background of Noé and Domi. In any case, it did not disappoint, and it definitely confirms that Vanitas no Karte is one of the most gorgeously animated works of the season.
Some fans might be wary of flashbacks, especially early in the season, but I think this one really worked well; it helped us understand Noé better and realize that his journey to help vampires is, in fact, deeply personal. With that in mind, the stakes feel higher than ever.

The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 5 Recap
Vanitas no Carte is based on a manga of the same name and follows Noé, a young vampire in search of the Book of Vanitas. This grimoire was reportedly made by Vanitas, a vampire of the Blue Moon, who was despised by the vampires of the Red Moon - the traditional vampire society.
Noe meets a man named Vanitas, after the original creator of the grimoire, who claims to be a human doctor for vampires, using the book to heal them from the corruption of their true name, which makes them predators against their will. Noé and Vanitas join forces, but the first episode ends with Noé admitting that he had to kill Vanitas by the end of their joint journey.

The Charlatan has Noé in his claws, and while the latter is ready to fight, all his resolution vanishes when the monster mentions his childhood friend, Louis.
When Noé was a child, the Teacher took him to live in the de Sade household, where he met Domi and Louis. The latter was shunned by his family due to being a curse-bearer, the meaning of which he could not understand at the time. Nevertheless, the three children were very close.
Growing up, Noé realized that he could access other people's memories by drinking their blood, and he sensed Louis' intense sadness, though not its cause. A depressed Louis tried to make sense of his affliction, but the Teacher did not help him and urged him to do as he pleased. Louis started curving wooden stakes as a 'gift' for Noé, the meaning of which is only made clear later.
When Mina, a girl from the nearby village was about to be executed as a "curse-bearer," Noé and Domi decided to help her escape even though Louis insisted there was nothing to be done. During the attempt, Mina went berserk and tried to kill Noé, but Louis appeared and defeated her. Unfortunately, tasting her blood caused him to lose control and kill all village children.
Realizing what he did, Louis urged Noé to kill him, knowing there was no going back, but Noé couldn't bring himself to, so in the end, Teacher killed Louis himself.
Back in the present, the Charlatan offers Noé to be reunited with Louis in exchange for his real name, but at that point, Vanitas comes at Noé's aid.
The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 6Release Date
The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 6 titled "Questions" is airing on Saturday, August 7 for subscribed Funimation users. Depending on your time zone, you might be able to access it from August 6.
If you aren't subscribed to Funimation, you can catch up with episode 5 on the 6th of August, but you'll have to wait an extra week, until August 13, to watch Episode 6 of Vanitas no Karte online. Alternatively, you can watch the series on Hulu.
A dub hasn't been announced at this time of writing, but this could change very soon.
