Hayao Miyazaki’s and Makoto Shinkai’s latest films have already become box office hits, and they’re likely to get even more attention now. That’s because The Boy and the Heron and Suzume have been nominated at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.

Recently, the Golden Globes announced its official nominees list. For its Best Animated Feature Film Award, the new movies by Miyazaki and Shinkai were nominated. This is the first time that two anime films were nominated in the same year.

The Boy and the Heron opened in US cinemas last Friday, and it has since become a big hit as it topped the US domestic box office during its opening weekend – a first for an original anime film.

Now, Miyazaki’s latest movie has gotten recognition from the Golden Globes as it was nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category. This is the first time for Miyazaki to get a Golden Globe nomination.

That’s not to say that Miyazaki has never been honored in the US before. Two decades ago, Miyazaki’s Spirited Away was awarded the Best Animated Feature at the 75th Oscars.

Aside from the Animated Feature category, The Boy and the Heron also got another nomination. Joe Hisaishi’s music for the film was nominated in the Golden Globe’s Best Original Score category.

Much like Miyazaki, this is the first time that Hisaishi has been nominated for a Golden Globe.

This year, Suzume by Makoto Shinkai was nominated for the Animated Feature category, marking Shinkai’s first Golden Globe nomination.

With this, Shinkai has picked up another honor as Suzume was also part of the official selection at the prestigious 73rd Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

In the history of the Golden Globes, only two anime films have ever been nominated. These are Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai in 2018 and Masaaki Yuasa’s Inu-Oh last year.

As two anime movies are nominated, this might be the best chance for an anime film to take home the award.

Of course, that’s not guaranteed. After all, this year also saw the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, an animated film that got widespread acclaim and is considered a frontrunner for the award.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards is happening on January 7, 2024, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
