It was recently revealed that Matt Reeves' The Batman will get a spinoff series that'll focus on the Gotham City Police Department. Not only does the official announcement tease an upcoming show, but it also revealed that The Batman is set to build its own universe separate from the DCEU franchise.

The new Gotham PD series will be set in the same world as Reeves' The Batman, "ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms." There is yet to be other projects revealed that'll precede the show or follow the film, but the announcement indicates that there are big plans for a Batman-shared universe in both film and television.

Aside from Bruce Wayne, Commissioner Gordon, and Alfred Pennyworth, The Batman will introduce various characters such as Catwoman, Penguin, and The Riddler. These characters are perfect for their own spinoffs, not to mention a whole slew of Batman-related heroes such as Batgirl, Robin, etc as well as potential villain-led spinoffs for the Dark Knight's foes.

This universe could give the fans a chance to explore and learn more about the characters of Gotham City. The announcement raises more questions than answers though, with fans excited to find out which characters could eventually be featured in the Gotham PD series as well as other potential projects to arrive in the future.

The Batman is set for release on October 1, 2021.
