The Batman Director Reveals Sequel is Already in the Works

We're now just a week away before Matt Reeves' The Batman makes its way into theaters and there's a lot of hype for the film as it will be Robert Pattinson's debut as the Caped Crusader and it looks like it will be very different from any other Batman films before. The film is planned to be the first in a trilogy. Now, it looks like it is officially going to happen since a follow-up installment is now already in the works.

Per The Direct, during the red carpet premiere of The Batman, Reeves was asked if fans should be looking forward to a sequel to which he responded, "I hope so, we’ll see — I mean for sure! I mean look, you don’t make number one as if there’s going to be number two. You have to make number one as if you’re swinging for the fences and it has to be a movie that stands and lives on its own."

Reeves also shared his excitement about telling more stories within Gotham City with the numerous shows that they have in the works for HBO Max and confirmed that he has started conversations with Warner Bros. regarding a potential sequel. "But I really believe in what we’ve done and I’d be excited to tell more stories," he continued. "We are already telling other stories in the streaming space, we’re doing stuff on HBO Max, we're doing a Penguin show with Colin which is gonna be super cool, and we're doing some work on some other stuff too. But we have started talking about another movie, but, y’know, right now we’ll just put it out in the world and I’ll try to enjoy this."

It is exciting to hear that a sequel is already in early development. Of course, it will all depend on the film's performance during its opening weekend next week as well as the responses from the critics (which are still under embargo right now) and the audience. If there is overwhelming enthusiasm for the first film, you can bet that Warner Bros. will give an official green light to the sequel within a few days after the release.

Reeves is also right that they should focus more on the first film before they work on the sequel since there is still a possibility that the audience won't respond to the film. But then they already started working on at least two HBO Max shows based on the film so it means that the studio already has high confidence in the film and all they can hope is that the audience will respond to it as well. We shall just wait and see if Warner Bros. will make the sequel official shortly after the release.
