The Batman: HBO Max Developing Penguin Spinoff Series

Matt Reeves' The Batman is easily one of the most anticipated films next year as fans are eager to see Robert Pattinson's take on the Caped Crusader and, based on the trailer that was released last year, it seems like it's going to be a much different take on the world of Gotham than in the previous iterations that we saw. The film hasn't been out yet, but plans are already inset for the future of the franchise including one that will focus on one of Batman's most famous foes.

It has been reported that HBO Max is currently developing a spinoff series of The Batman that will focus on The Penguin. Per Variety, Colin Farrell, who is set to play the character in the film, has been approached to star in the series but no deal has been placed yet. They also reported that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Lauren LeFranc is attached to write and showrun the series that is still in its very early stages.

The series is set to focus on the character's rise to power in the Gotham criminal world akin to the film Scarface. Reeves and The Batman producer Dylan Clark will executive produce the project.

This isn't the only The Batman spinoff series that is currently in the works on HBO Max as we reported a while back that Reeves is developing a spinoff series that will focus on the Gotham City Police Department. This project is said to be set during Batman's first year of crime-fighting and it will be told from the perspective of a corrupt GCPD police officer. Joe Barton will showrun the series.

Even though the film will not be out in cinemas until March next year, Reeves has already stated that they intended it as the first installment of a trilogy. The fact that they are already working on two spinoff series is a sign that the higher brass at Warner Bros. is confident in Reeves' new take on the Caped Crusader and the world of Gotham. The spinoff series will be an opportunity for him to further expand the universe and add up to the world-building that he is establishing in the film.

The Batman is set to be released in cinemas on March 4, 2022.
