Tessa Thompson Says Valkyrie's Sexuality was a 'Big Topic' in Thor: Love and Thunder

In just a few more days, fans will witness again the triumphant return of the fan-beloved God of Thunder in Thor: Love and Thunder. Alongside Hemsworth's titular hero, the upcoming film will also see the return of the new King of Asgard, Valkyrie, fighting side-by-side with Thor ever since her debut in Ragnarok. However, this new adventure also intends to intensively explore more of Valkyrie's sexuality, which is a significant aspect of the character, according to Tessa Thompson.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Thor: Love and Thunder star Tessa Thompson discussed how the upcoming film represented LGBTQ+ individuals accurately, particularly with her character Valkyrie.

“We talked about it a lot, it was big topic of conversation,” says Thompson, who is bisexual in real life. “Because I think rightfully there’s this real want in audiences to see characters be very clearly queer or LGBTQIA inside these spaces. And I think it’s hugely important to have representation. And also as humans I think that we are not defined by our sexuality, and by who we love. And so sometimes I think to hang a narrative completely on that is a way of actually diminishing the humanity of the character. Because you don’t allow them to be anything else.”

Thompson added, “It becomes the only storyline, particularly in a movie like this where you don’t, frankly, have a lot of room for storyline. So there was a lot of conversation in terms of how to treat that with Valkyrie. And I feel really good, personally, about where we got to. I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity. But whether or not she finds love in this movie doesn’t mean she’s not still a fabulous queer character that is open to finding love when it makes sense.”

Although Valkyrie was already confirmed as queer since Thor: Ragnarok, it would still be awesome to explore more of the character's sexuality, including her love life. However, as the King of Asgard, and while she is occupied assisting two Thors in a battle against Christian Bale's villainous Gorr The God Butcher, can she really spare some time for her love life?

Regardless of sexuality, Valkyrie will always be an amazing character, and no one would even argue that she is the perfect King for Asgard. She is wise like a Queen and mighty like a King. For sure, we will see more of Valkyrie's badassery in Thor: Love and Thunder, hitting the big screens on July 8.
