Tessa Thompson Defends 'King' of Asgard Title in Thor: Love and Thunder

In just two more weeks, fans would witness the monumental return of Chris Hemsworth's mighty hero in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Alongside the God of Thunder, the upcoming film will also see the return of Thor-centric characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Korg, and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, who is now the new King of Asgard. However, fans have long wondered why she goes along with the 'King' title, instead of Queen? Thankfully, Tessa Thompson finally has an answer.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Tessa Thompson opens up about her latest outing as Valkyrie in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Discussing her role, Thompson also unveiled why she is titled King of Asgard instead of Queen.

“I think she’s very egalitarian... she’s a kind king. I know there’s been some confusion on the internet in terms of the gendering with her being king," Thompson said. "The truth is, that’s the job that Thor was going to do, and then he just gave her the job, and we just didn’t bother to change the title, because the title is ‘king’, and she’s like, ‘Well, I can be king.’ The suits that she wears – we thought it was sort of a fun nod to Frida Kahlo.”

Although she undeniably enjoys her title as the King of Asgard, Thompson noted that Valkyrie 'feels a lack of purpose' and seemingly misses the momentum of a battle.

“Last time around, you met her, she was quite despondent, and missing her sisters, and not dealing with her trauma, maybe, in the healthiest of ways... this time around, I think you meet her with a new sort of lease on life, in a position of leadership, representing her people" Thompson added. "She loves her people, and loves being able to lead for them. She also really enjoys being on Earth. But I think she feels a lack of purpose... I think the time when she feels most of use is really in community – it’s been, historically, in battle, with her tribe. And so I think in some ways, now having this new sort of problem to deal with, with her old friend Thor, it’s exactly what she needs.”

Regardless of the title, it doesn't really matter at all. In fact, Valkyrie is the perfect ruler of Asgard as she possesses both King and Queen characteristics; she's mighty like a King, and articulate like a Queen.

Despite Valkyrie's new responsibility as a King, of course, fans would love to see her fighting side by side with Thor just like in Ragnarok. However, in the newly dropped trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, it seems that she will be occupied with Natalie Portman's Lady Thor, and looks like the two would establish an awesome heroine duo.

As a King, Valkyrie would absolutely do anything to protect Asgard from Christian Bale's Gorr The God Butcher. Now that the upcoming film is set to feature two Thors, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Valkyrie, fans are in for a treat as an epic battle is about to come.

Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in theaters on July 8.
