Joining Chris Hemsworth in the titular role, Natalie Portman will reprise her role as Thor’s estranged love interest, Jane Foster. While the entire plot for Thor: Love and Thunder remain undisclosed at this point, the confirmed synopsis only revealed minor details about the upcoming film, with Thor’s bothered retirement as the renowned Avenger, Gorr as the main villain who will go on a killing spree murdering gods across different universes, and Jane Foster’s debut as Lady Thor, wielding Mjolnir.

A recent Thor: Love and Thunder merch seemingly reveals that Foster will be suffering from cancer in the upcoming film. Now, this cancer storyline is directly referenced from Marvel Comics, where Foster originally battled cancer and got entangled with shredded pieces of Mjolnir. Every time Foster wields Mjolnir, all the toxins from her body including the chemotherapy toxins are expunged from her body, purifying her and giving her Thor’s godlike abilities. Unfortunately, as soon as Mjolnir left her grasp, she would just revert back to being a normal person battling cancer.

Now that Jane Foster is confirmed to be Lady Thor and the cancer storyline is Foster’s fate in the upcoming film, the only mystery that fans have to wonder now is how she becomes mighty of Thor’s Mjolnir. Our theory suggests that astrophysicist Jane Foster found the shredded pieces of Mjolnir and tried to experiment with it. At some point, Foster successfully assembled all the broken pieces, but the radiation from the destroyed hammer gave her cancer. But just like in the comics, cancer toxins are expunged every time she lifts Mjolnir, and she is possessed with Thor-like abilities, gaining the title Lady Thor.

Take this theory with a grain of salt, as Marvel has not yet revealed any details about Foster’s backstory. Aside from the cancer storyline, how she wields Mjolnir still stays a puzzle.

We will unravel how Jane Foster's Lady Thor develops when Thor: Love and Thunder hit the big screens on July 8, 2022.
