After the second SAO Progressive movie’s release in cinemas a few months back, fans have another project to look forward to. Recently, Sword Art Online teased a mysterious project that seems to feature Kirito and Asuna as villains.

The announcement was made via the official Sword Art Online Twitter account. It featured a teaser video that didn’t really reveal much about the project.

However, the announcement did come with a website link that gave us an interesting new visual featuring villainous versions of SAO’s two main characters.

Sword Art Online Sequels and Spin-offs

While it didn’t invent the virtual reality anime subgenre, it’s fair to say that Sword Art Online is one of the shows that popularized it. When the first anime series premiered back in 2012, the show became a huge hit.

Aside from spawning various sequels, Sword Art Online has also expanded to various adaptations as well as spin-off titles. These include not only TV anime but also new light novels, manga, and more.

One of the most popular spin-off series is Sword Art Online: Progressive, which began as a new light novel series that went into detail about the events of the Aincrad arc.

This novel series was then adapted into two movies, the first being Aria of a Starless Night, which was released back in 2021.

It was followed up by Scherzo of the Deep Night, which was released in Japan back in October.

These two Progressive movies are the second and third films in the franchise, and there’s another one that’s also currently in the works.

Sword Art Online Anomaly Quest Project

As fans eagerly await news about the movie, SAO announced Anomaly Quest, a mysterious new project that seems to be another spin-off.

But what makes it unique is that it seems to transform Kirito and Asuna into villains.

Not a lot of details have been revealed, but according to the announcement tweet, Anomaly Quest won’t be a video project.

Based on the wording of the announcement and the scant details on the website, some fans believe that this will be an experiential game, possibly an escape room game.

If that is indeed the case, it shouldn’t come as a surprise given that popular anime such as Demon Slayer also got their own escape room games.

We can’t say for certain what it is right now though, so we’ll have to wait for an official announcement soon.
