After the latest Sword Art Online Progressive film was released in Japan, a new Sword Art Online original movie was announced as part of the series’ 10th-anniversary celebration.
This new movie was announced during the Sword Art Online -Full Dive- event on Sunday.
There, the film was revealed, though there wasn’t much in the way of details announced.
Sword Art Online – A Pioneer Isekai Series
Sword Art Online (or SAO) is an isekai anime by A-1 Pictures that’s based on the light novel series of the same name by Reki Kawahara.
The light novel series began in April 2009 with the release of Volume 1. Currently, the main series has 26 volumes (not counting spin-offs).
Thanks to the novel series’ popularity, an anime adaptation was released, with the first season airing in 2012.
The series proved to be a big hit as Season 1 was followed by additional seasons, a spin-off series, movies, and game adaptations.
The story centers around a virtual reality MMORPG called Sword Art Online. Soon, the game’s creator traps thousands of players inside the game.
Players can’t log out, and the only way for them to escape is to beat all one hundred levels of the game’s world of Aincrad.
The catch here is that players who die in the game will also die in real life.
The series specifically follows Kirito, one of the 1,000 closed beta testers of the game, giving him an advantage.
However, instead of journeying with companions, Kirito faces the game’s challenges alone.

Sword Art Online New Movie Announcement
Currently, there are three films in the franchise, with the first being released in 2017 with a story that’s set between Seasons 2 and 3.
The next two films are based on the Sword Art Online Progressive spin-off light novel series, which were released in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
During the reveal of the new movie, an announcement trailer was released, as well as a new video from A-1 Pictures.

Although an announcement was made, there’s currently no word yet on what the movie will be about.
Even the trailer doesn’t contain much info about the film’s story.
However, based on the replies to the tweet announcement of the movie, fans are theorizing that this upcoming film will take place after Sword Art Online Season 3.
