Suzume Fourth Highest-Grossing

As Makoto Shinkai’s latest film gets released in more countries around the world, it has now reached a major box office milestone. Ahead of the film’s US release, Suzume has surpassed One Piece Film: Red to become the fourth-highest-grossing anime film worldwide.

This is an impressive feat considering that the film is yet to release in several major markets, including the US.

Though Suzume’s global box office record is thanks in large part to its success in one country.

A few months ago, One Piece Film: Red broke all kinds of records to become one of the biggest anime films in recent memory.

Aside from quickly becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise, One Piece Red also became the fourth highest-earning anime movie globally, thus proving One Piece’s enduring popularity around the world.

But after just a couple of months, Suzume has passed One Piece Red in the worldwide box office ranking as it has a worldwide gross of USD 256.18 million.

Its huge worldwide box office tally is thanks in large part to China as the film recently opened in Chinese theaters on March 24.

Since its release, the film earned USD 104.89 million in China, making it the country’s highest-earning Japanese film.

Given its Japanese earnings of USD 107.44 million, it’s likely that China will soon become Suzume’s biggest market.

When this happens, Suzume will become the first anime film to earn more in China than in its home country.

With the film reaching a new box office milestone even before it opens in the US, some think that Suzume can become one of the top three anime films globally. Though it’s not guaranteed given the current top three.

In third place is Makoto Shinkai's other film Your Name which was a huge hit back in 2016.

With a total box office tally of USD 382.2 million, Suzume will need to earn more than USD 100 million of its current tally to exceed it.

Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away is in second place with USD 395 million.

Finally, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is the highest-earning anime film with USD 507 million, and Suzume won’t likely beat this movie even after it opens globally.

Suzume will release in US cinemas this week, with English and Japanese dub options.
