As the film’s release gets closer, a new trailer for Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari was released just recently, and it shows the main character, Suzume, sharing romantic moments with a chair. As expected, anime fans are reacting to it with bewilderment.

The new trailer for the next Shinkai film was released on the official TOHO Movie YouTube channel. This is the longest trailer for the film yet, and it features English subtitles so that fans outside Japan can understand what’s happening.

Not that this makes it any easier to understand why a guy turns into a chair, though.

Along with the trailer’s announcement, new cast members were revealed, including Eri Fukatsu as Tamaki Iwato, Matsumoto Hakuo II as Hitsujiro Munakata, Shota Sometani as Minoru Okabe, Sairi Ito as Rumi Ninomiya, Kotone Hanase as Chika Amabe, and Kana Hanazawa as Tsubame Iwato.

In case you missed its announcement, Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume's Locking Up in English) is the next movie by Makoto Shinkai, the renowned director of hit anime films such as Weathering with You and Your Name.

The movie follows Suzume, a 17-year-old girl living in a town in Kyushu.

Suzume meets a young man who is looking for a mysterious door.

They find this door at an abandoned house in the mountains, but as Suzume reaches out towards the door, she is pulled in.

After this, mysterious doors begin appearing all over Japan, sparking a wave of disasters.

Suzume soon decides to journey across the country to lock these doors and prevent further destruction.

The story summary mentions fantastical elements that are reminiscent of Shinkai’s other works, but a character turning into a chair and getting romantic scenes with Suzume is something that fans didn’t expect.

On Twitter, many fans reacted to the scene with shock and laughter. While turning into a chair is one thing, many pointed out how weird and funny the scenes were between Suzume and the chair.

Despite these reactions, many are still excited about the movie based on Twitter reactions. This should come as no surprise for anime fans considering how beloved Shinkai’s works are.

Fans can see more of the girl and chair romance when Suzume no Tojimari comes out in Japanese cinemas on November 11, 2022, with an international release set for early 2023.

Currently, there’s no announcement yet about a specific release date.
