What Is Suzume All About?
Before we delve deeper into how the anime film ended, let us first talk about the movie. The film follows the story of Suzume Iwato.
She is a 17-year-old girl living in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan). Her aunt raised her after her mother died.
One day, she was biking to school when she saw a stranger looking for a door.
For an unknown reason, she understood what he needed and even suggested he check the nearby resort.
She tracks the strange man named Souta and, surprisingly, encounters the door herself.
She tried to enter it but failed and ended up on the other side of the door, which is still in the same location as where she was before.
That small incident led to more mysterious moments in her life to the point that she had no choice but to join the man on his journey.
The movie focuses on earthquakes in Japan. Suzume’s meddling triggered the door to cause even stronger earthquakes.
While it can only showcase natural disasters, Suzume also highlights the main character’s past, present, and future and how she plans to handle them as she goes through life.

How Did Suzume End?
Toward the end of the anime film, Souta decides to sacrifice for the greater good. But the story does not end there.
Suzume asked help from Tamaki and Souta’s friend to help Souta escape from Ever-After. The only way to do that is to cross the door once again.
However, since she is still alive, the only door that could lead her back to Souta passes through the door in her hometown. It was the same door she crossed as a kid.
Daijin, on the other hand, decided to help Suzume and Souta by using him and his twin to seal the Worm.
Once everything was resolved, Suzume saw her old self in the spirit realm and even gave her the chair from her mother.
Suzume and Souta then went back to the real world.

Suzume Ending Explained
From the get-go, we understand that Suzume showcases the beauty of Japan as well as the natural disasters that occur in the country.
The doors symbolize the past and the present, and closing each door meant letting go of the past.
The film further delved into this concept by having Suzume meet her younger and older self, guiding her throughout her journey.
By closing one’s past, Suzume and Souta do not only let go of their own memories and feelings but also the emotions of the people who were with them during that specific moment.
But what happens to Daijin and Sadaijin? The two “cats” revert to being the keystones that keep the balance between the present and the past.
Through Suzume and Souta, Daijin learned how crucial their roles were and decided to continue what was destined for them.
The doors will keep appearing in the future, but the disasters will not be as severe as before.
As long as the keystones, Souta, and Suzume are there, the balance will always be restored.
