Is Suzume no Tojimari a Romance Movie?
Compared to other Makoto Shinkai films like 5 Centimeters Per Second, Suzume isn't as much of a romance anime movie.
Romance is still there, as Suzume likes Souta from the first moment and tries to find him again.
This ultimately leads to them having a life-changing supernatural adventure together. However, some viewers didn't vibe with Suzume's romance.
Souta is a bit older than 17-year-old Suzume. This, along with the fact that he spends much of the movie as a chair, makes the romance less relatable for some.
Moreover, many viewers feel that, overall, the romance between Souta and Suzume wasn't built up sufficiently to make everyone root for it, especially since neither of the two leads felt particularly three-dimensional.
Of course, there's only so much character development one can fit into a movie.
The generic romantic plot is bound to have mass appeal, even if it's mostly forgettable.
At the end of the day, Suzume's strongest point is its depiction of the trauma earthquake survivors might face, rather than its romance.
Do Suzume and Souta Get Separated in the End?
After both keystones get replaced, Suzume and Souta leave the Ever-After and go their separate ways.
Suzume returns to Kyushu with her aunt Tamaki, while Souta goes back to Tokyo.
However, the final scene has them meet again on the same road where they saw each other for the first time.
Do Suzume and Souta End Up Together?
The ending of Suzume no Tojimari doesn't give us an easy answer as to whether Suzume and Souta get together.
Instead, it drops a hint and lets viewers draw their own conclusions.
The movie concludes with Suzume and Souta seeing each other again at the same location where they bumped into each other for the first time.
The implication seems to be that they'll resume their relationship, and the scene would have probably been omitted if we weren't supposed to at least think of the possibility.
In fact, such ambiguous endings are quite common in romance plots -- both in anime and elsewhere.
When a creator doesn't want to conclusively make the two leads an official couple, they'll often plant such an ambiguous reunion scene and trust the audience to do the rest.
