Sunmi confirms participation in Spotify’s new project.

If there’s K-pop, Sunmi invented her own and called it Sunmi-pop. The former Wonder Girls member explained that the genre shares songs with her fans that have upbeat dance rhythms with lyrics that have double meanings.

For instance, her song Siren means the warning sound. It also tells the tale of a mythological figure of the same name. Sunmi also applies this to all her songs since Gashina, adding metaphors to Heroine, Black Pearl, Curve, Lalalay, and Tail.

With her unique style that empowers women, Sunmi has been tapped to be part of a project launched by Spotify.

Sunmi Now Part of Spotify EQUAL

On Wednesday, a Korean news outlet confirmed that Sunmi would be releasing a new single next week as part of Spotify EQUAL’s project.

The post by her official Twitter page confirmed that the singer would drop the song, titled Oh Sorry Ya, on March 8 at 2:00 p.m KST.

Spotify EQUAL started in 2021. The music platform created the campaign as part of International Women’s Day yearly. Through the initiative, Spotify works on promoting equity for women in the music industry. It also dropped the program EQUAL Hub, a space women creators can visit to increase awareness of their work.

Spotify’s Vice President and Global Co-head of Music Marian Dicus said (as quoted by Forbes), “With billions of songs and millions of podcasts on Spotify, it’s easy for fans to default to what they know and love best. But the EQUAL Hub makes it easy for fans to engage directly with women creators and their content helps to increase awareness amongst fans so that more people listen, ensuring their music shapes the future.”

Last year, Spotify also released episodes of WOMN, which featured guests including Jenny Lorenzo, Tokimonsta, and Jazzmyne Robbins.

Sunmi Becomes Spotify Queen!

Apart from taking part in Spotify EQUAL, Sunmi also got the chance to join a slew of Korean singers as the Spotify Queens last month.

Sunmi ranked 15th after gaining 6,800 new followers in the first week of February. Korea Portal then listed the official rankings, naming Lisa, IU, Rose, Jennie, and Hwasa the top 5 Korean Spotify artists.

Meanwhile, SOMI, Jessi, HyunA, Lee Hi, Taeyeon, BOL4, Chungha, Moonbyul, and Yena completed the Top 15.
