San-X is a stationery company in Japan that’s popular for its adorable characters. Recently, San-X announced that its Sumikko Gurashi character line is getting its first-ever TV anime adaptation.
The upcoming anime was revealed with a new trailer that features the adorable Sumikko Gurashi characters. Also revealed was the show’s fairly short length, as well as its release date in Japan.
There have been two anime films based on the brand before, but this is the first TV anime adaptation. However, this is not the first San-X brand to get the TV anime treatment.
Another San-X Character Brand Is Getting an Adaptation
San-X may sometimes be mistaken for Sanrio, but these two brands are entirely different companies.
Sanrio is home to iconic characters like Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, and My Melody. Meanwhile, San-X is best known for Rilakkuma.
Aside from being huge in Japan, Rilakkuma has also become quite popular internationally. This is thanks in large part to the two animated series projects by Netflix.
The first is titled Rilakkuma and Kaoru, and it’s a stop-motion animated series that stars the lazy bear Rilakkuma along with two other popular characters in the brand – Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori.
Thanks to its success, the San-X character brand got another stop-motion animation series last year titled Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure.
The series featured more adventures starring Rilakkuma and his friends, though it is mostly set in a theme park and introduces new characters.
Soon, another San-X brand is getting a TV series, but it will feature more conventional 2D animation instead of stop-motion. It also won't be a Netflix anime.

Sumikko Gurashi 5-Episode Anime Announced
Sumikko Gurashi may not be as well-known as Rilakkuma, but this brand should be a perfect fit for lovers of all things cute. After all, it features a lot of adorable characters.
The upcoming Sumikko Gurashi anime is shaping up to be the perfect introduction to those unfamiliar with the characters. Based on the new trailer, it should deliver charming scenes for a relaxing watch.

Similar to the two Rilakkuma series, this upcoming anime will only have five episodes. The first episode will be broadcast in Japan on October 26, 2023.
Following the series’ release, there will also be a third Sumikko Gurashi anime film. It will be released in Japan on November 3, 2023.
Currently, there’s no word on international release plans for the TV anime.
