Reigen, Mob, and company’s reaction faces have become memes among anime fans since the first season aired. And recently, an interview with the studio BONES president revealed how the Mob Psycho 100 meme reaction faces were made.

BONES president Masahiko Minami was recently interviewed by Crunchyroll ahead of the season 3 premiere in Fall 2022.

In the interview, Minami shared his excitement for the manga, as well as some interesting insight into the show’s creation.

As the reaction faces in the anime are iconic, Minami was asked about how the studio made the Mob Psycho 100 meme faces for the likes of Reigen.

Minami shared that a lot of the credit can be attributed to the animation team along with series director Yuzuru Tachikawa.

He explained that the original manga art by ONE is simple and doesn’t have many lines which made it challenging to animate.

But thanks to the talented animators and Tachikawa’s expert direction, the anime was able to do the original work justice, all while adding meme-worthy flair.

Aside from the faces, director Tachikawa was also credited by Minami for his direction of the show’s action sequences. After all, the series is an action-focused anime, and it has garnered praise from critics and fans for its creative action sequences.

Along with Tachikawa, character designer Yoshimichi Kameda was also important in making sure the characters’ facial expressions were shown clearly and distinctly, even amidst heavy action.

Mob Psycho 100 is an anime series by studio Bones that is based on the manga of the same name by One, the creator of One-Punch Man. The manga was serialized in Ura Sunday Comics from April 2012 to December 2017.
