Street Man Fighter has been under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Following the success of Street Woman Fighter, Mnet decided to create a spinoff and produce a male-version of the competition. It officially started presenting its eighth male dance crew on August 23.

However, the series still has not experienced a positive response streak due to the controversies it stirred.

Street Man Fighter Under Fire Again

Fans of the Street Woman Fighter franchise were left enraged due to the comments made by the producers, with some viewers saying they were sexist.

Korea JoongAng Daily shared parts of the press conference held on Tuesday at Stanford Hotel Korea, in Yeongdeungpo District, western Seoul, where Street Woman Fighter and Street Man Fighter producers reportedly made below-the-belt statements.

Chief producer Kwon Yeong Chan differentiated the two programs, saying that the current male contestants "displayed loyalty and pride more often" while the participants in Street Woman Fighter showed jealousy and greed against one another.

"While I was planning for the second season of 'Street Woman Fighter,' I began to think that I wanted to share the stories of male dancers with the public as well,” he said.

Producer-director Choi Jeong Nam shared a similar sentiment, saying that the dance moves of women and men dancers are different. He particularly pointed out that male dancers are more “powerful.”

Although they thought that their comments were solely for creative purposes only, the public expressed their outrage as the producers showed “gender stereotypes.”

Street Man Fighter Is No Longer New to Criticisms

Before the recent sexist comments, the show — and even its host — suffered from criticisms due to different reasons.

Before its premiere, fans — particularly BTOB fans, Melody — slammed the show and Mnet after one of the groups copied BTOB.

The BIIB dance crew said that its name is read as B TO B, which is similar to how fans pronounce BTOB. It stands for the dance crew’s full name, BANK2BROTHERS. Melodies immediately expressed their anger through an online community as the idol group’s name appeared on the show after the network tweaked it a little.

They also noticed that the same dance crew copied the logo the boy group used during the early years of its career.

Meanwhile, its host, Kang Daniel, was also called out for his sexist comments when he said something against Street Woman Fighter.

The program is yet to comment on the new and past issues.
